Collision details at LaGuardia
An Air Canada Express CRJ-900 jet collided with a fire truck while landing at New York’s LaGuardia airport, killing the pilot and co-pilot. Nine others were seriously injured and taken to hospital. The fire vehicle had been responding to a separate emergency incident, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Flight and passenger information
The plane, operated by Jazz Aviation, carried 72 passengers and four crew members from Montreal. The aircraft struck the fire truck at about 24mph during landing, causing significant damage to the plane’s nose and tipping the truck on its side. Stairways were used to evacuate passengers from the tilted aircraft.
Airport closure and response
LaGuardia airport was closed following the crash, with the FAA expecting it to remain shut until 2pm on Monday. Eighteen flights were diverted or returned to their origin. Emergency services responded quickly, and the Port Authority coordinated medical care for injured personnel.
Investigation underway
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA have not yet provided detailed comments. Preliminary radio transmissions suggest air traffic controllers attempted to halt the fire truck before the collision, highlighting coordination challenges during runway emergencies.
