The Cyprus Journalistic Ethics Committee has introduced a new provision on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its Code of Journalistic Ethics, accompanied by a series of guiding principles for journalists using AI tools in their work.
According to the Committee, the new provision was added as part of a broader update to the Code and reflects the growing relevance of AI in news production. The guidelines stress that AI use by journalists does not undermine journalism’s core values. On the contrary, it can enhance objectivity, accuracy, impartiality, and credibility, while maintaining public trust.
The guidelines also state that AI-generated content must be used in a way that respects both the general and specific provisions of the Code of Journalistic Ethics. The Committee clarified that AI is not considered a primary source of information, material, or opinion. Journalists using AI-generated content must therefore ensure that any information used is verified, accurate, and reliable, and that no opinions expressed via such tools violate ethical standards.
Content created with AI tools must be fact-checked and verified at all stages of production. It must also undergo human review and editorial oversight before being published, broadcast, or posted by any media outlet.
The Committee concluded by underlining that AI tools do not replace journalists, whose responsibility is to inform the public in line with established principles and professional ethics. It acknowledged, however, that generative AI can significantly streamline content production and data analysis, thereby enhancing the overall capabilities of journalism.
