Hong Kong’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputing centre has officially started operations, providing the computational power needed to support the city’s ambition to become a leading hub for innovation and technology (I&T).
The facility is located within Cyberport, a dedicated technology hub that hosts over 330 startups specialising in AI and big data management.
The new supercomputing centre is expected to deliver computing power exceeding 3,000 petaFLOPS (peta referring to the ability to perform at least one quadrillion calculations per second). Additionally, it will process up to 10 billion digital images per hour, meeting the growing demand from universities, tech companies, and research institutions.
“AI is perhaps the most critical technology for developing new, high-quality productive forces in Hong Kong,” said Sun Dong, Minister for Innovation, Technology, and Industry in the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.
“Hong Kong must actively seize this opportunity and lead in the development of artificial intelligence,” the minister added.
