The Assembly of Experts, which will select the next supreme leader of Iran following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has largely reached a majority consensus, according to Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbagheri, a member of the body.
According to the Mehr news agency, he said there are still “some obstacles” that need to be resolved regarding the process.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military warned today that it will continue to pursue any successor to Iran’s supreme leader. In a post on X written in Persian, the Israeli army also warned that it would target anyone attempting to appoint a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, referring to the body responsible for selecting him.
Yesterday, a senior cleric in the Assembly of Experts said its members would convene “within one day” to choose the new leader.
Iranian media reported that there is some disagreement within the Assembly over whether the final decision should be made during an in-person meeting or issued without following that formal procedure.
Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekaseer, another member of the Assembly of Experts, said in a video published by Nournews that under the current circumstances it is not possible to hold an in-person meeting to conduct the final vote.
He added that a candidate has already been selected, based on advice from the late Ali Khamenei, who reportedly said Iran’s supreme leader should be someone “hated by the enemy rather than praised by it.”
