Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce honoured at SBIFF

Date:

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honour the stars of the film The Brutalist, Oscar-winner Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce, with the “Cinema Vanguard Award” during its 40th edition.

According to Deadline, the “Cinema Vanguard Award” recognises actors who have forged their own path, taking artistic risks and making significant contributions to cinema.

“Both Adrien and Guy have had long, successful, and uncompromising careers, and in this year’s The Brutalist, each delivers their best performance to date,” said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling.

Directed by Brady Corbet, The Brutalist follows “an immigrant architect (Brody) making waves in post-World War II America while working for a tough industrialist (Pearce). Together, they plan to erect a stunning building, but not everything is as it seems between them. The tension between the two drives the plot and symbolises the broader struggle between innovation and tradition.”

The cast also includes Joe Alwyn, Stacy Martin, and Alessandro Nivola, among others.

The screenplay was penned by the director and Norwegian filmmaker Mona Fastvold. The 3.5-hour-long A24 production premiered globally at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion for Best Direction. The film is considered a strong contender in this year’s Oscars race and is set for release in US cinemas on 20 December.

The 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place from 4 to 15 February 2025.
