Attempted poisoning of exiled Syrian leader, Assad reported

Date:

Russian Telegram channel General SVR has reported an alleged assassination attempt against exiled former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, claiming he was poisoned. Assad has been under Russian President Vladimir Putin’s protection in Moscow since December 8 of last year.

The channel, purportedly run by a former Russian intelligence officer, stated that Assad fell ill on Sunday, seeking medical assistance after experiencing severe coughing and choking. According to the report, water temporarily relieved his symptoms, but he continued to suffer from breathing difficulties, headaches, and abdominal pain. Medical examinations reportedly detected traces of a poisonous substance in his system.

Assad’s condition was stabilised by Monday, with emergency medical care provided at his Moscow residence, where a makeshift treatment ward was set up. Russian authorities were informed immediately, and an investigation is underway to determine how Assad was exposed to the poison. However, no sources for these claims have been clarified, nor has there been confirmation from Russian officials.

This development follows recent revelations that Assad’s wife, Asma, who was born in London, has been effectively barred from returning to the UK due to her expired passport. The Assad family has been living in exile in Moscow since the collapse of their regime, which was overthrown by rebels in a matter of days after nearly two decades in power.

President Vladimir Putin, a known ally of the Assad family, provided them with sanctuary. However, reports suggest that Asma al-Assad is keen to return to the UK and may even be considering divorce.
