From today, private hospitals within the General Healthcare System (GeSY) will allocate two to three beds daily to OKYPY to ease pressure on public hospitals and reduce waiting times at Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments.
The agreement will remain in effect until the end of February.
Speaking to the Third Programme, Health Minister Michalis Damianou stated that the healthcare system is under strain, with significant delays at A&E departments, particularly in Nicosia. However, he noted that all private hospitals affiliated with the General Healthcare System in Nicosia have responded positively, increasing the number of available beds by 12 to 18 per day.
Regarding the general hospital in Paphos, which has flooded for the third time this winter, the Health Minister commented that the situation “is not a credit to anyone.”
He also mentioned that since early November, he had asked OKYPY to take corrective action, which, as he stated, has not yet been implemented.
Mr Damianou highlighted that the organisation’s budget includes funding for this purpose and emphasised that “it is time for OKYPY to take responsibility.”
