ON THIS DAY: BBC launches first HD television broadcast (1936)

Date:

On 2 November 1936, at 3 pm, BBC television broadcasting entered a new era with the launch of the world’s first regular high-definition television service from specially constructed studios at Alexandra Palace in North London.

The launch was a major milestone in television history, marking the transition from experimental broadcasts towards a regular public service.

What did high-definition mean in 1936?

High-definition television in 1936 was very different from the digital HD technology familiar today. The term referred to television systems offering substantially greater picture detail than earlier experimental broadcasts.

The BBC initially used two competing systems: a 240-line mechanical system developed by John Logie Baird and a 405-line electronic system developed by Marconi-EMI. The electronic system was eventually adopted as the standard.

Alexandra Palace becomes a television landmark

Alexandra Palace became the home of the BBC’s pioneering television service, with purpose-built studios and transmission facilities overlooking London.

The historic launch helped establish regular high-definition television broadcasting as a practical service, laying the groundwork for the expansion of television into one of the world’s most influential forms of communication.
