Filo Jet crew warned it would “sink”, audio recordings reveal

Date:

Audio recordings examined as part of the investigation into the Filo Jet shipwreck reportedly contain warnings from crew members that the vessel would sink and claims that its company was not investing in maintenance.

The ship sank off the coast of occupied Kyrenia on 30 August. Nine suspects appeared again before the so-called Kyrenia District Court, which ordered their detention for a further seven days. They face charges related to causing death through negligence.

Recordings reveal concerns over vessel’s condition

According to the so-called police, investigators have examined 32 days of recordings from the vessel’s voyage data recorder, with another 34 days of material still to be reviewed. There is no audio recording from the day of the shipwreck.

The recordings reportedly include discussions about faults affecting the rudder, radar and cameras, as well as water entering the vessel during previous journeys.

In one recording, crew members can reportedly be heard saying, “This ship will sink.” In another, the captain describes the vessel’s condition as very poor and says it is taking on water.

The material is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sinking.

Experts to join investigation as searches continue

A university expert and a team of specialists from Turkey are expected to take part in the investigation.

The number of people wanted in connection with the case has risen to six, while searches continue for a three-year-old girl who remains missing.

Relatives of the victims gathered outside the so-called court again, demanding justice and protesting what they described as the slow progress of the investigation.

The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the suspects have not been proven in court.
