The Minister of Justice described the changes taking place in prisons at all levels as revolutionary.
Speaking to state radio, Marios Hartsiotis highlighted the structural and technological upgrades as well as the staffing improvements in prisons.
He stated that 72 new prison officers were recruited in 2024, with an additional 77 positions already announced for 2025.
Hartsiotis assured that a system for deactivating mobile phones in prisons will be operational within 2025.
Referring to the prison facilities, he noted that the old open prison building was reconstructed, and a new wing for closed detention was built, adhering to all European standards.
He emphasised that, for the first time since 1894, the Republic of Cyprus now has a second new prison facility, with a capacity for 240 inmates.
He also mentioned that the Council of Ministers has approved the construction of a new building within the broader area of the central prisons, designed to accommodate 360 inmates. This project is expected to be completed by 2028.
Upon completion, the total capacity of the prison system will reach 1,200 individuals.
Hartsiotis also stated that reforms in the Audit Office and Legal Services are nearing implementation. He noted that two bills are currently under legal review by the Legal Service.
