Cyprus approved to share medical records with other European countries

Date:

Cyprus has received approval to begin testing a new clinical document exchange service, paving the way for wider cross-border sharing of medical information through the European MyHealth@EU network.

The approval was granted to the National Contact Point for eHealth (NCPeH) as part of the development of cross-border digital health services in Cyprus.

According to the National eHealth Authority, the new service will expand the country’s ability to exchange comprehensive medical records securely with participating European countries, helping healthcare professionals make better-informed decisions and supporting patient care.

What medical information can be shared?

The new service will allow clinical documents to be exchanged securely between participating countries. These include hospital reports and discharge summaries, laboratory results, medical reports and medical images.

The service could be particularly important when patients require medical treatment in another participating European country. Access to relevant clinical information can help healthcare professionals understand a patient’s medical history and healthcare needs more effectively.

Approval follows successful testing

The approval follows the successful completion of operational tests in July 2026 and a detailed compliance assessment in August, which concluded without any observations, according to the National eHealth Authority.

On 13 October 2026, the eHealth Member States Expert Group (eHMSEG) unanimously approved the launch of the service, confirming that Cyprus was ready to proceed to the next stage.

Part of the European digital health initiative

The development builds on Cyprus’ participation in MyHealth@EU, which began in May 2025.

The initiative forms part of wider European efforts to improve the secure exchange of health information across borders and support the implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

The expansion of these services is intended to make relevant medical information more accessible to healthcare professionals when patients receive treatment in other participating European countries.
