Maurizio Mastrini brings CAPELLI to the Cyprus Wine Museum

Date:

The Italian pianist and composer performs his own music on 22 October, as part of the Commandaria Orchestra & Friends Chamber Music Series.

The Cyprus Wine Museum welcomes Italian pianist and composer Maurizio Mastrini on Thursday, 22 October 2026, for a recital dedicated entirely to his own compositions. Presented within the Commandaria Orchestra & Friends Chamber Music Series, the concert forms part of his CAPELLI International Tour 2026–2028.

Mastrini’s music moves between lyrical melodies, the spare textures of minimalism and passages of rhythmic energy and virtuosity. His classical training provides the foundation, but his approach to writing and performing leaves room for experimentation. At the Cyprus Wine Museum, audiences will hear these works directly from their composer, with all the individual choices of touch, phrasing and expression that this brings.

The title CAPELLI, Italian for “hair”, has a personal significance. Mastrini has described his distinctive long hair as a form of shelter from the outside world. The recording project bearing that name takes a more revealing direction: a musical self-portrait shaped by memories, encounters and experiences, drawing on contemporary minimalism, South American influences and touches of jazz.

The recital comprises twelve works arranged in four suites: Aria, Capelli, Ghost and Freedom. The places associated with the pieces trace connections across continents, from Tokyo and Paris to New York, Havana and Buenos Aires, returning repeatedly to Colle San Paolo in Italy. The programme brings together compositions from different stages of Mastrini’s career, including No Smoking, dated 2011, and El Cubano, dated 2026.

Originally from Umbria, Mastrini studied at the Francesco Morlacchi Conservatoire in Perugia. His interest in testing the possibilities of the piano has produced some unconventional projects, among them Il Mio Mondo al Contrario, in which he explored performing classical compositions from the last note back to the first. That willingness to look at familiar musical ideas differently remains an important part of his work as both composer and performer.

For this recital, the focus is on his own writing. The setting of the Cyprus Wine Museum in Erimi offers an opportunity to encounter that music at close quarters, through a programme that brings the composer’s earlier pieces into conversation with his more recent work.
