Greek actor Dimitris Imellos dies at 57 after long battle with cancer

Dimitris Imellos passed away at the age of 57 after battling cancer, leaving his family and the artistic community in mourning.

The actor was one of the most talented and versatile artists on the Greek theatre and television scene. Dimitris Imellos became widely recognised for his role as Antonis Fragiadakis in the Alpha TV series Sasmos.

The acclaimed actor was previously married and had a son, Fivos, aged 25, who also appeared in Sasmos.

Who was Dimitris Imellos?

Born on 12 June 1967 in Kypseli, Athens, Imellos had roots in Naxos, specifically the villages of Filoti and Apeiranthos. He grew up in a large family with four children and often described his son as the greatest gift of his life.

Although he initially began studying at the Athens Law School, Imellos soon pursued his passion for acting. He trained at the Theatre Workshop of Vasilis Diamantopoulos and graduated from the Drama School of Diomedes Fotiadis. His artistic journey led him to Moscow, where he studied directing at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS).

His theatre career included collaborations with top directors and roles in productions such as Oedipus at Colonus, Medea, The Persians, Erotokritos, and Tartuffe. From 2001 to 2007, he was a member of the National Theatre’s Experimental Stage under Stathis Livathinos.

In 2001, he became the first young actor to receive the Horn Award for his performance in Frenapati, and in 2005, he won the Athinorama Magazine Best Actor Award for his role in Molière.

Dimitris Imellos also made his mark on television with notable roles in series such as To 10, Sasmos, Karyotakis, and Saint Paisios. On the big screen, he delivered standout performances in films like Bank Bang, Delivery, and Tailor.
