Archbishop on Avvakoum: Believers’ displeasure understandable

Date:

The case of Avvakoum is closed for the Church concerning the two individuals accused, stated Archbishop Georgios.

Speaking on public radio, he mentioned that depending on the outcome of the trial and the findings, it is possible for the Church to revisit the matter. This, he added, could happen if new evidence emerges that was not presented to the Holy Synod.

The head of the Church of Cyprus acknowledged that it is natural for believers to feel displeased, as they expect role models to emulate but are instead presented with examples to avoid.

The Archbishop also emphasised that vague accusations against others should not be left unchallenged. He urged that if serious accusations exist, they should be formally presented; otherwise, baseless insinuations should cease. He suggested that some individuals might be making such accusations to shift blame away from themselves.
