A former American Idol contestant and Ohio music pastor has been found guilty of murdering his wife, after prosecutors said he shot her twice in the back of the head while she slept and then attempted to blame the killing on intruders.
Caleb Flynn, 40, wept in court as the jury returned its verdict after deliberating for less than three hours. He was convicted of murdering his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn, at their home in Tipp City, a suburb of Dayton, on 16 February.
Flynn was found guilty of all nine charges against him, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole and is due to be sentenced on 5 October.
The American Idol murder trial lasted eight days and included evidence ranging from police body-camera footage and data from Flynn’s iPhone and Apple Watch to tens of thousands of messages exchanged with a woman with whom he had been having an affair.
Messages revealed desire to kill his wife
Prosecutors called dozens of witnesses, including Flynn’s former mistress, 24-year-old Alleigha Botner, whom he met while she was an intern at his church.
The pair exchanged around 100,000 text messages during their nearly 18-month relationship, some of which were read aloud during the trial.
In one message sent in August 2025, Flynn wrote that he had stayed awake until 04:00 crying and thinking about ways to kill his wife without going to prison.
In another, he wrote that he wanted her “dead and gone”.
Botner told the court she now hated Flynn “because I believe that he murdered his wife”.
During closing arguments, prosecutor Paul Watkins argued that the messages demonstrated Flynn’s “hatred” towards Ashley. He said Flynn feared that a divorce could cost him custody of his daughters, his position at the church and his job with his wife’s family business.
Flynn claimed intruders killed his wife
When police arrived at the family’s home in the early hours of 16 February, Flynn told officers he had been in his daughters’ bedroom when he heard gunshots.
He claimed he discovered his wife dead in their bedroom after noticing that a side door to the garage was open.
Prosecutors said Flynn later told investigators he had not been to the garage, contradicting his earlier account.
His gun, which had been stored in the centre console of his truck, has not been found. Investigators discovered the truck’s centre console open when they arrived at the scene.
Defence lawyer Patrick Mulligan argued there was no concrete evidence linking Flynn to the killing.
“Connecting a couple of meaningless dots doesn’t solve the case,” he told the court.
Mulligan argued that evidence Flynn had been unfaithful did not amount to evidence that he murdered his wife.
AI-generated song played to jury
The American Idol murder case also attracted attention after an AI-generated song connected to Flynn’s affair was played in court.
Botner spent two days on the witness stand and explained the lyrics line by line. Prosecutors said Flynn had written and dedicated the song to her.
Footage showing the jury’s reaction to the song, including what appeared to be laughter, subsequently spread widely online.
Joseph Wilhelm, a special agent with Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations, also testified that several apps had been uninstalled from Flynn’s phone before his wife’s death, including Instagram and an AI music-generation app.
Wilhelm said the music app was connected to Flynn’s relationship with Botner.
The defence called no witnesses during the trial.
Flynn appeared on American Idol in 2013
Flynn appeared on the 12th season of American Idol in 2013, performing before judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.
His audition was televised and he received a “golden ticket” to advance to the Hollywood stage, although he did not ultimately reach the main competition.
“Music is all I know, it’s what I live to do and I love to sing, so that’s why I auditioned,” Flynn said in footage broadcast on the programme.
“Maybe my wife kinda nudged me a little, too.”
Flynn will return to court for sentencing on 5 October.
