Police discovered and neutralised a powerful improvised explosive device after pursuing a motorcyclist who fled the scene in Mesa Geitonia.
A powerful Limassol bomb was discovered outside a shop in Mesa Geitonia in the early hours of Wednesday after police responded to reports of suspicious activity in the area.
At around 02:30, police received information about the suspicious movements of a person riding a motorcycle near a shop in Mesa Geitonia.
Officers immediately went to the scene, where they spotted a high-powered motorcycle without registration plates carrying one person.
Motorcyclist flees as police arrive
Upon seeing the officers, the motorcycle rider fled the area.
Police pursued the motorcycle but were unable to stop it.
During a subsequent search outside the entrance to the shop, officers discovered a high-powered improvised explosive device which had failed to detonate.
A police bomb disposal expert was called to the scene and neutralised the Limassol bomb.
Police investigation continues
The Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is continuing its investigation into the incident.
Police have not provided further details about the identity of the motorcyclist or the possible motive behind the incident.
