A 37-year-old British man pleaded guilty on Tuesday, September 22, to a charge relating to the death of his three-year-old son before the Paphos District Court.
The man is accused of causing the death of the child through a reckless, careless or dangerous act.
The case concerns the death of the three-year-old boy, who fell from a height of around 10 metres from the fourth floor of a hotel in Paphos on the first day of his family’s holiday in Cyprus.
Sentencing preparation
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the defendant’s lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, asked the court for time to prepare submissions on the facts of the case and mitigation before sentencing.
The prosecution did not object to the request.
The court scheduled the case for October 5, 2026, at 10am.
The defendant was also allowed to remain free under the same conditions currently in place.
Previous request to suspend prosecution
At an earlier hearing on August 27, the defendant’s lawyer had asked for the criminal proceedings against his client to be suspended on humanitarian grounds.
The prosecution representative said at the time that the request had been rejected.
The Attorney General had acknowledged the tragic circumstances of the case but stressed that they did not alter the fact that the three-year-old child had died.
Conditions of release reinstated
The 37-year-old had travelled to the UK after the temporary suspension of his restrictions to attend his son’s funeral and deal with administrative matters in his capacity as the child’s guardian.
The Paphos District Court had temporarily lifted the restrictions from August 7 until September 14.
The original conditions came back into effect on September 15.
They include a €20,000 financial guarantee, a ban on leaving Cyprus, surrender of his travel documents and weekly reporting to Paphos Police Station.
