The Cyprus Hunting Federation has raised concerns over what it describes as harassment, following the recent registration of the issue for discussion by the Parliamentary Environment Committee.
The federation said it has identified, reported and highlighted for years the problem of legal hunters being harassed by individuals or organised groups while carrying out hunting activities.
It “unequivocally condemns any action aimed at obstructing or harassing citizens who legally engage in hunting”, according to a statement.
Safety concerns in rural areas
The federation said such behaviour creates unnecessary tensions in rural areas and could put the safety of those involved at risk.
It added that such incidents do not contribute to social harmony or mutual respect.
The federation also stressed its longstanding opposition to poaching and illegal hunting.
“Every illegal hunting activity” is condemned, it said, adding that it supports the effective enforcement of legislation by the competent authorities.
Call for respect for the law
The federation said respect for legality must apply to everyone.
It stressed that while hunters have an obligation to comply fully with hunting legislation and safety rules, they also have the right to carry out legal activities without intimidation, obstruction or harassment.
