Two 20-year-olds were arrested in Ayia Napa as part of an investigation into the possession and circulation of counterfeit banknotes.
Shortly after midnight, police officers conducting a foot patrol in Ayia Napa received information about two customers at a premises who had allegedly attempted to pay with banknotes believed to be counterfeit.
Police officers went to the premises, where employees handed them two €200 banknotes that appeared to be fake. The employees also identified the two individuals who had allegedly attempted to use the notes.
Three more banknotes found
Subsequent checks established that the two individuals were both 20 years old. A further three €200 banknotes were found in their possession, none of which bore the required security features.
The two 20-year-olds were arrested for offences committed in flagrante delicto and were taken into custody.
The five banknotes were seized as evidence for further examination.
The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department is continuing its investigations.
