The Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) Police has launched Operation “Hunter”, a coordinated operation aimed at supporting lawful and responsible activity during the hunting season.
The operation will run from 23 August until 28 February next year and focuses on preventing and detecting poaching, illegal training of hunting dogs and other related offences within the SBAs.
SBA Police is working closely with the SBA Administration Environmental Department, the Republic of Cyprus Game and Fauna Service and Cyprus Police.
Police issue hunting season advice
With the hunting season now underway, Dhekelia Station has issued advice highlighting the risks and potential penalties for breaches of legislation.
Particular emphasis has been placed on illegal bird trapping and the prohibited training of hunting dogs in areas where such activity is not permitted.
Police officers will conduct targeted patrols and intelligence-led operations throughout the hunting season.
Technology to support enforcement
Police will also use technology to support enforcement activity, including drones, surveillance equipment, body-worn video cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).
Hunters are reminded of their legal responsibilities, including holding the appropriate licences and complying with authorised hunting dates and locations.
Police also stressed the importance of public safety, wildlife protection and preventing damage to private property during the hunting season.
Public urged to report suspicious activity
Chief Inspector Tony Demetriou, Head of Operations at SBA Police Akrotiri, said authorities would take a robust approach towards poaching, illegal dog training and any activity that places the public, wildlife or property at risk.
He encouraged members of the public to report suspicious hunting-related activity, including shooting in prohibited areas, using vehicles to pursue wildlife, illegal dog training and suspected poaching.
“All reports will be assessed and acted upon in accordance with the information available and the level of identified risk,” he said.
SBA Police wished all lawful hunters a safe and responsible hunting season and reminded everyone enjoying the countryside to remain mindful of their own safety and that of others.
