A young man from Paphos may have to wait up to a year for surgery following a serious hand injury, after being unable to secure an appointment with an allergist.
According to Sigma correspondent in Paphos Marios Ignatiou, the operation had initially been scheduled. However, during preparations, the young man suffered a severe allergic reaction, forcing doctors to stop the procedure.
A specialised allergy assessment was deemed necessary before another operation could safely take place.
Appointments extend into 2027
The required allergy tests have proved difficult to arrange, with very limited options available.
After being unable to undergo the necessary assessment in the private sector, the young man turned to the public healthcare system.
However, the earliest appointments offered to him reportedly extend to July and October 2027, potentially leaving him facing a surgery delay of more than a year.
Family seeks solution abroad
Meanwhile, the need for surgical treatment of his serious hand injury remains.
The young man and his family are now looking for a solution, including potentially travelling abroad, so that the necessary allergy assessment can be carried out as soon as possible and the operation can proceed.
