Rising fuel prices are changing the way motorists spend at petrol stations, with many drivers now buying just €20 worth of fuel at a time and some spending as little as €5, according to petrol station representatives.
Speaking on SIGMA’s “Protoselido” programme, petrol station owners’ spokesman Christodoulos Christodoulou expressed concern over the continued rise in international oil prices, with the outlook remaining bleak as the war continues and no prospect of de-escalation is in sight.
Christodoulou said the international oil price stood at $94-$95 on Wednesday and had risen to $96 on Thursday. He warned that if it reaches $100, the situation could become “uncontrollable”.
Further concern, he said, comes from plans for green taxation, which is expected to place additional pressure on fuel prices.
Drivers increasingly spending €20 at the pump
The impact of the rising cost of living is already visible at petrol stations, according to Christodoulou, with consumers becoming increasingly cautious about how much they spend.
He said the majority of motorists are now buying €20 worth of fuel at a time, while some customers are putting just €5 into their vehicles.
As fuel prices rise, he added, more consumers are travelling to the occupied areas to buy fuel, a trend he expects to intensify with the introduction of green taxation.
Heating oil could cost households €3,000
The cost of heating is also causing concern ahead of the winter months.
With heating oil currently at around €1.50 per litre, a household requiring approximately 2,000 litres over the winter could face a bill of €3,000.
By comparison, 1,000 litres of heating oil cost approximately €1,000 to €1,050 during the corresponding period last year. The same quantity now costs around €1,500.
The figures underline the growing pressure from fuel prices on household budgets, with both motorists and families preparing for higher energy costs in the months ahead.
