The Kyrenia shipwreck has been located at a depth of around 514 metres, according to Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, as search operations for 20 missing people continue.
In a social media post, Erhürman said the Turkish vessel TCG Alemdar had also reached the area to assist with the search.
“TCG Alemdar has also arrived. It has the same technology as TCG Işın. We have reached the ship,” he said.
Erhürman added that operations were continuing around the clock and would proceed without interruption.
Underwater robots used in search
According to Turkish Cypriot media, work is being carried out around the wreck using robotic imaging equipment.
The vessel was initially located at an estimated depth of 550 metres. Authorities had been working through the night to establish whether the object detected was the sunken Filo Jet.
The captain of the Turkish vessel conducting the operation said earlier that, following identification of the wreck, a detailed survey and inspection would be carried out around and above the vessel using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV).
The shipwreck occurred last Sunday off the coast of Kyrenia, leaving eight people dead and 20 missing.
According to the so-called prime minister Ünal Üstel, authorities expect to receive further information from the vessel and reach the missing people later today.
Families continue to seek answers
Meanwhile, relatives of those missing remained outside Kyrenia port on Tuesday, waiting for information about their loved ones. Tensions were reported at intervals.
Families questioned why the so-called Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı had not visited the port and said they would remain there waiting for him. They also called on him to go to the site.
Of the 19 people who had been hospitalised following the tragedy, 13 were discharged on Tuesday.
