Two fires break out in Cape Greco – Arson not ruled out

Two fires broke out on Monday morning along the road from Sea Caves towards the Cape Greco Environmental Information Centre, but were quickly extinguished by passing members of the public before they could spread.

Fires extinguished before spreading

According to a written statement by Forestry Department spokesman Glafkos Kyriakou, the department was informed at 10:37 am about two fire outbreaks along the road from Sea Caves towards the Cape Greco Environmental Information Centre.

The two fires were immediately put out by passing members of the public before they had a chance to spread.

The Forestry Department thanked the public for their prompt response and contribution to extinguishing the fires.

Forestry Department and Fire Service personnel subsequently went to the area and secured the sites.

Possible malicious action investigated

The Forestry Department remains on alert and is monitoring the area while investigations into the cause of the fires are under way.

Mr Kyriakou said the possibility that the fires were deliberately started has not been ruled out.
