Rain and hail showers were recorded intermittently in mountainous areas on Thursday afternoon, offering a brief break from the late-August heat and confirming forecasts by the Meteorological Service.
A yellow weather warning remains in effect.
Rain and thunderstorms expected
Seasonal low pressure is affecting the area, while a disturbance from the north is expected to influence Cyprus on Saturday.
Tonight, the weather will remain mainly clear, although increased low cloud will develop at times, particularly along the coast. Thin fog or mist may also form towards dawn, mainly in the east and inland.
Temperatures will fall to around 21°C inland, 23°C on the coast and 20°C in the highest mountains.
On Friday, the weather will be mainly clear, with temporarily increased local cloud. After midday, cloud development over the mountains and possibly inland may bring isolated showers, with a brief isolated thunderstorm also possible.
Temperatures will reach around 40°C inland, 32°C on the west and southwest coasts, 34°C elsewhere along the coast and 30°C in the highest mountains.
Sharp temperature drop on Saturday
The weather outlook changes significantly on Saturday, when the island is expected to see mainly cloudy conditions, local rain and isolated thunderstorms.
The weather phenomena could be intense or prolonged in places, particularly in the eastern half of the island.
Temperatures are expected to fall noticeably, dropping below seasonal averages.
On Sunday, conditions will initially be mainly clear, but isolated showers or thunderstorms may develop after midday, mainly in the mountains and possibly inland and in the east.
Temperatures will rise slightly but remain below normal for the time of year.
