Rain possible before a stormy Saturday
A yellow weather warning is in force today as temperatures are expected to reach around 40°C inland, although isolated rain is also forecast in mountainous and inland areas.
The warning will be in effect from 13:00 until 16:00.
Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, while a disturbance approaching from the north is expected to influence the island on Saturday.
Temperatures reach 40°C inland
Today, after local low cloud and patches of mist or fog clear, conditions will become generally mostly fine.
However, clouds developing after midday are expected to bring isolated rain, mainly over the mountains but also in some inland areas.
Winds will initially be light and variable at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. Locally along the southern coast, winds may strengthen to 4 to 5 Beaufort during the afternoon.
The sea will generally be calm to slight.
Temperatures will rise to around 40°C inland, 32°C on the western coast, 34°C on the remaining coasts and 30°C in the higher mountains.
The yellow weather warning for high temperatures will remain in effect between 13:00 and 16:00.
Fog possible overnight
Tonight will be mostly clear, although increased low cloud is expected at times, particularly along the coast.
Later in the night and around dawn, patches of mist or fog are expected to develop, mainly in south-eastern and inland areas.
Winds will be mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, initially light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort before gradually easing to 3 Beaufort.
The sea will remain generally calm to slight.
Temperatures will fall to around 21°C inland, 23°C along the coast and 20°C in the higher mountains.
Thunderstorms expected on Saturday
Friday will be mostly fine, although increased cloud over the mountains after midday could produce isolated rain.
A significant change is expected on Saturday, when conditions will become mostly cloudy with local rain and isolated thunderstorms. The weather may be intense or prolonged in some areas.
On Sunday, conditions will initially be mostly fine, but increased cloud after midday is expected to bring isolated rain, mainly over the mountains, inland and in southern areas.
Temperatures will remain largely unchanged on Friday and above the seasonal average.
A noticeable drop is forecast for Saturday, taking temperatures below the seasonal norm, before a slight rise on Sunday.
