Greece and Italy are moving towards finalising an agreement for the acquisition of two Bergamini-class FREMM frigates by the Hellenic Navy, with the relevant implementing agreement scheduled to be signed in Rome on 8 September 2026.
According to Greece’s Ministry of National Defence, the agreement will effectively activate the programme to acquire the two Italian vessels. It follows a Memorandum of Cooperation and a Declaration of Intent signed in La Spezia on 29 September 2025.
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto, and the Chiefs of the Hellenic and Italian Navies are expected to attend the signing.
The implementing agreement will be signed by Greece’s General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments and its Italian counterpart.
First frigate expected in 2028
The agreement will finalise the legal, financial and technical terms for the acquisition of the first two FREMM frigates, as well as the transfer timetable, support arrangements and participation of the Greek defence industry.
The first frigate, Carlo Bergamini (F-590), is expected to be transferred to Greece during the first half of 2028.
The Virginio Fasan (F-591) is scheduled to follow during the first half of 2029.
