Egypt-Greece interconnection targeted for 2031

Date:

Egypt plans to begin operating a 3GW electricity interconnection with Greece by 2031, according to information reported by Bloomberg Asharq.

The Egypt-Greece interconnection will link the electricity grids of Egypt and Europe through a subsea cable in the Eastern Mediterranean. The investment is estimated at between €3 billion and €4 billion.

Greek consulting company Geotek has completed the project’s financial assessment, while environmental studies and surveys for the cable route are expected to be completed by May 2028.

Construction could begin in 2028

The Copelouzos Group, the project’s main developer, plans to launch the relevant tenders in early 2028.

If financing and final approvals are secured, construction is expected to begin in the middle of the same year.

Through the Egypt-Greece interconnection, Egypt aims to export electricity to Europe, with a significant share expected to come from renewable energy sources.

Egypt plans wider regional links

Egypt is also promoting a separate electricity interconnection with Cyprus, while a 3,000MW project with Saudi Arabia is already under development.

Cairo’s plans also include a new subsea cable with Jordan, with the potential to facilitate electricity exports to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
