The Cyprus Animal Party has expressed strong opposition to renewed calls for the creation of an organised beach at Lara, stressing the need to protect the area’s natural environment and wildlife.
The party was responding to comments by the Deputy Mayor of Ineia following the illegal placement of umbrellas, sun loungers and tents at Lara.
Calls for strict protection
In a statement, the Cyprus Animal Party said the incident had prompted renewed calls for an organised beach, with references to the centuries-long coexistence between people and the environment in Akamas.
However, it argued that history could not be used as a justification for degrading an area that is now protected because human activity has reached levels that could cause irreversible harm to the natural environment and wildlife.
The party stressed the importance of protecting Lara beach, describing it as one of Cyprus’ most significant nesting sites for sea turtles.
Both Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas reproduce in the area.
Restrictions in place since 1989
The Cyprus Animal Party said the protection of the area is a statutory obligation of the Republic of Cyprus.
It also noted that restrictions in the Lara–Toxeftra protected area have been in place since 1989.
The party called on all competent authorities to enforce the legislation without exception.
