The Cyprus wildfire risk will reach red alert level on Friday, with the Forestry Department warning of a heightened danger of forest fires starting and spreading.
In an announcement on Thursday, the department issued a strong appeal to the public to exercise particular caution when outdoors and to completely avoid any actions or activities that could cause a fire.
Public urged to exercise extreme caution
The Forestry Department stressed that starting a fire is a criminal offence under both the Forest Law and legislation governing the prevention and extinguishing of countryside fires, with offenders facing severe penalties.
The red alert reflects the increased wildfire risk and authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant throughout Friday.
Anyone who sees smoke or fire should immediately contact the Forestry Department on 1407 or the Fire Service on 112.
