Cyprus to introduce new smart traffic signal systems

Date:

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works is accepting bids until September 18 for the supply, installation and operation of new traffic signal systems at 15 signal-controlled junctions in Nicosia and Limassol.

The project involves the installation, programming and operation of Vehicle-Actuated Signal (VA) systems using Above Ground Detectors (AGD) to detect vehicles and adjust traffic signals according to real-time traffic conditions.

Work is scheduled to begin in early October and will be funded through national resources. The estimated project cost is €41,900, excluding VAT.

Seven junctions in Nicosia, eight in Limassol

The project aims to introduce adaptive traffic signal control at seven junctions in Nicosia and eight in Limassol through the installation and integration of AGD detectors.

The traffic signal systems will detect vehicles in real time and dynamically adjust signal timings.

According to the Ministry, the system is expected to reduce vehicle delays, queue lengths and overall journey times at the selected junctions and along the relevant road corridors.

The project also aims to improve traffic flow efficiency under different levels of traffic demand, while enhancing road safety and operational reliability at signal-controlled junctions.

The system will be designed to be scalable and easy to maintain, while remaining compatible with existing traffic signal infrastructure.

Three-month implementation period

The tender will be conducted through an open procedure, with the contract awarded based on the most economically advantageous offer according to price.

The project is expected to be completed within three months.

The detectors will be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty of at least 24 months.
