The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the injury of a 76-year-old nursing home resident following a complaint by his daughter.
According to Paphos Assistant Police Director of Operations, Michalis Nicolaou, on Saturday night, 7 December 2024, after 8:00 PM, a woman visited the Polis Chrysochous police station and reported that her 76-year-old father, a resident of a local nursing home, had sustained injuries. She expressed suspicions of possible abuse at the nursing home.
The elderly man was hospitalised at Polis Chrysochous Hospital, Nicolaou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). Following police investigations, it was revealed that on the morning of 6 December, the man had been transported to the hospital, examined, and diagnosed with external injuries and a nasal bone fracture by the attending doctor.
By midday, he was discharged and returned to the nursing home. However, on 7 December 2024, he developed certain medical complications, including a fever, and was readmitted to Polis Chrysochous Hospital for unrelated health issues. Nicolaou clarified that a pathological condition had been identified.
Further investigations by the police uncovered independent testimony indicating that on the night of 6 December, around 2:00 AM, the 76-year-old had an accident while attempting to leave the nursing home, which resulted in his injuries.
However, the case remains under investigation, Nicolaou stated. The elderly man is expected to be examined by a medical examiner to verify the daughter’s allegations and determine whether all his injuries were indeed caused by the accident or if something else may have occurred.
