An apartment fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in a first-floor flat at a residential complex in Kapparis, Famagusta district, causing extensive damage and injuring a neighbour.
According to the Fire Service, a call was received at 7:02 pm and two fire engines from the Famagusta Fire Station “Lochias Adamou Adamou” responded to the scene. The blaze was brought fully under control at 7:15 pm.
Balcony blaze causes extensive damage
The fire initially started on the apartment’s balcony before spreading inside after the glass balcony enclosure broke.
The flames and intense heat caused significant damage to parts of the apartment’s contents, while affecting wall paintwork and the flooring.
The resident managed to safely leave the apartment before firefighters arrived.
Neighbour injured while helping
Before the arrival of the Fire Service, a neighbour attempted to put out the flames and suffered a hand injury.
Firefighters provided first aid at the scene before the injured person was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Famagusta General Hospital for further treatment.
Investigation into cause underway
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Service.
Initial assessments have not ruled out the possibility that the blaze was caused by smoking materials, such as cigarette butts, which may have been extinguished in a plant pot on the balcony.
