National Council meeting ends after 2.5-hour session

Date:

Cyprus’ National Council concluded its meeting at the Presidential Palace at around 1:15pm on Monday, following more than two and a half hours of discussions chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides.

During the meeting, President Christodoulides briefed members on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue following last week’s visits to the island by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the newly appointed European Union Special Representative for the Cyprus issue, Raffaele Fitto.

Focus on preparations for expanded conference

The briefing centred on diplomatic efforts aimed at preparing the ground for a successful expanded conference on the Cyprus issue.

President Christodoulides had said on Saturday that technical-level preparatory work had already begun in cooperation with the United Nations to create the conditions for a productive expanded conference.

He added that the preparatory process would continue throughout August as efforts intensify to advance the next stage of negotiations.
