Three fires keep Fire Service busy as smoke blankets Nicosia

Date:

Three separate fires triggered a major response from emergency services on Sunday, while thick black smoke from a blaze in the occupied village of Gerolakkos spread across parts of Nicosia.

According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the smoke visible across the capital originated from a wildfire burning in the occupied area of Gerolakkos.

Meanwhile, firefighters responded to a separate blaze involving dry grass, wild vegetation and crop stubble near the community of Meniko.

The operation involved five fire engines from Nicosia, supported by two Forestry Department vehicles, a Civil Defence portable firefighting unit, volunteer groups Atlas-Dias and SupportCY, as well as two firefighting aircraft that carried out water drops.

The fire was brought under control after burning approximately one hectare, with crews remaining at the scene to extinguish remaining hotspots.

Shortly afterwards, a third fire broke out near the community of Ergates, burning dry grass and a ravine containing piles of rubbish.

Three fire engines and two firefighting aircraft responded, successfully containing the blaze. Firefighters remain at the scene carrying out final extinguishing operations.
