A new line of investigation has opened in the case of the British woman found dead inside a suitcase in Kypseli, Athens, after authorities discovered she had arrived in Greece through Cyprus.
The identification of the 38-year-old woman is considered a key development, as it provides Greek investigators with a starting point to trace her final movements and identify people she may have contacted before her death.
Identity confirmed through Interpol
Greek authorities confirmed that the body found inside the suitcase belonged to a British national born in February 1988.
Her identity was established after the Greek Police (ELAS) received official documentation from the Interpol office in Washington, USA.
Initial investigations showed that the woman had travelled to Greece via Cyprus in the period before her death.
Authorities seek travel and accommodation records
Investigators are now collecting information about her movements, including whether she travelled with another person and details of her arrival in Greece.
Authorities are expected to request information from the airline involved, while also checking whether she had booked accommodation or rented a property in the Athens metropolitan area during the relevant period.
Greek investigators are also expected to contact the Cyprus Police, which will collect any available information that could assist the investigation.
The woman may have previously lived in the United States, where her biometric data could have been recorded.
Identification process
Following the discovery of the body, Greek authorities collected fingerprints, but her details were not found in Greek databases.
DNA testing also showed that the victim was not among people reported missing in Greece.
After investigators found that the woman was wearing shorts linked to a French university, information was shared through international police channels and with Interpol.
On Monday night, the case was solved when Interpol Washington informed Greek authorities that the victim was a 38-year-old British woman identified by the initials E.R.
