Raffaele Fitto arrives in Cyprus – Meetings with leaders on Friday

Date:

The EU’s Special Representative for the Cyprus issue and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto, is due to arrive in Cyprus on Thursday for a series of high-level meetings aimed at supporting efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.

On Friday, Fitto is scheduled to meet President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.

Supporting the UN-led Cyprus process

A European Commission spokesperson told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that the visit forms part of Fitto’s mandate to contribute to the UN-led Cyprus settlement process.

The spokesperson said Fitto will carry out his role in close cooperation and coordination with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín.

Visit follows Guterres mission

President Christodoulides confirmed on Wednesday that he would meet Fitto on Friday and said the EU Special Representative would also hold talks with Erhürman.

Fitto’s visit comes one day after UN Secretary-General António Guterres concluded his visit to Cyprus, which focused on efforts to advance the Cyprus peace process.
