Forestry Department advises National Guard to suspend live-fire exercises

Date:

The Forestry Department has advised the Cyprus National Guard to avoid conducting live-fire exercises that could spark wildfires during the current period of extreme fire risk.

Speaking to CyBC, Forestry Department spokesperson Glafkos Kyriakou said public awareness campaigns are ongoing and both citizens and government services are being informed about the heightened wildfire danger caused by high temperatures.

He added that the National Guard had been formally advised not to use ammunition that could ignite fires, despite the presence of firebreaks in training areas.

Asked whether the recommendations had been ignored, Kyriakou said that question should be answered by the relevant authorities.
