Around 4,500 beneficiaries in Cyprus will receive a 33% increase in the monthly mobility allowance, along with retroactive payments of up to €300, the Department for the Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities announced on Monday.
The increased payments, together with the one-off retroactive amount covering the period from 1 January 2026, will be deposited into beneficiaries’ bank accounts on 29 July.
The monthly mobility allowance has increased from €75 to €100, while recipients of the higher rate will see their payment rise from €150 to €200.
Retroactive payments of up to €300
Beneficiaries will also receive a one-off retroactive payment of up to €300.
The amount depends on the increase in the monthly allowance, either €25 or €50 per month, for the period between January and June 2026. Those who became eligible after 1 January will receive a proportionate payment.
New groups added to the scheme
The department said the allowance is available to people with quadriplegia or blindness, regardless of age or employment status.
It also covers people with moderate or severe physical disabilities, moderate or severe intellectual disabilities, or severe mental disabilities who are employed, studying or attending day care centres.
Patients undergoing haemodialysis and people with thalassaemia who participate in treatment programmes are also eligible.
From August, around 600 people aged over 65 with quadriplegia who were previously excluded from the scheme will begin receiving the allowance automatically, with no application required.
People with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities or severe mental disabilities who have now become eligible because they work or study can already submit applications to the department.
Part of new disability support law
The department also said that people already attending day care centres and receiving transport assistance do not need to take any action, as their increased allowance will be transferred to the new scheme in due course.
New applicants joining day care centres will be able to apply for the mobility allowance alongside applications for the new Day Care Centre Participation Grant, which will be introduced in September.
The increase and expansion of the mobility allowance form part of the implementation of the Social Participation, Inclusion and Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities Law (Law 96(I)/2026) and a Cabinet decision adopted on 2 July 2026, aimed at strengthening support and independent living for people with disabilities.
