Paphos ranked among top sunset destinations by Travel&Leisure

Date:

Paphos has secured another major international distinction after being named the world’s best destination for watching and photographing sunrises and sunsets.

According to the Paphos Regional Board of Tourism (ETAP Paphos), the recognition was highlighted by the internationally renowned travel magazine Travel + Leisure in an article published on 22 July 2026 titled “This Coastal City Was Just Named the World’s Best Place to Watch the Sunrise and Sunset.”

Tops global ranking

Paphos ranked first worldwide, ahead of iconic destinations including Santa Monica in California, the Maasai Mara in Kenya, Tamarindo in Costa Rica and the Sahara dunes in Morocco.

The international ranking was compiled by European photo products company CEWE in collaboration with award-winning travel photographer Bella Falk.

The destinations were assessed based on visual appeal, landscape diversity, accessibility and photographic opportunities during sunrise and sunset.

According to the ranking, Paphos’ western coastline, its combination of sea views, natural formations and historic landmarks, together with favourable weather throughout the year, were key factors behind its top position.

Tourism officials welcome recognition

Executive Director of ETAP Paphos, Nasos Hadjigeorgiou, said the latest international recognition confirms the uniqueness and authenticity of the region.

He said Paphos sunsets represent more than a beautiful natural spectacle, combining light, the sea, mythology, history and the area’s distinctive landscape into a complete visitor experience.

Hadjigeorgiou added that topping a global ranking and receiving coverage from an internationally respected publication such as Travel + Leisure significantly strengthens Paphos’ profile in overseas markets and creates new opportunities to promote nature, photography, culture and romantic tourism.

Supporting Cyprus’ tourism strategy

ETAP Paphos noted that the recognition carries additional significance after Cyprus was recently included by Travel + Leisure among the 50 best destinations to visit in 2026, with the publication also highlighting the country’s excellent seawater quality.

The organisation said the international exposure aligns with its strategy of promoting the Paphos region as a diverse, high-quality destination offering experiences beyond the traditional “sun and sea” holiday.

Through targeted digital campaigns, audiovisual productions and collaborations with international media and content creators, ETAP continues to showcase sunsets as one of the region’s most iconic and emotionally compelling attractions.

From Petra tou Romiou and the Kato Paphos coastline to the Sea Caves, the Akamas Peninsula, Latchi, Polis Chrysochous and Pomos, every sunset offers visitors a different perspective of the region through its light, colours and scenery.
