Heatwave pushes temperatures to 44°C, orange warning issued

Date:

The Cyprus heatwave is set to intensify today, with temperatures forecast to reach 44°C inland as the Department of Meteorology issues an orange weather warning.

The warning will be in effect from 12:00pm until 5:00pm, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 44°C in inland areas and 33°C in the higher mountains.

Orange warning in force

The weather will remain mostly clear throughout the day, although periods of increased cloud are expected in some areas.

Southwesterly to northwesterly winds will be light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, strengthening to 5 Beaufort at times during the afternoon in windward coastal areas. Seas will be slight to a little rough.

Temperatures are expected to reach around 37°C along the eastern, south-eastern and northern coasts, 35°C on the south-western and western coasts, and 33°C in the highest mountain regions.

Cooler weather expected

Tonight, conditions will remain mainly clear, although low cloud and patches of mist or fog are expected to develop later, particularly in south-eastern areas.

Overnight temperatures will fall to around 24°C inland and along the coast, and to 21°C in the higher mountains.

Friday will remain mostly sunny with occasional increased cloud. On Saturday and Sunday, afternoon cloud development could bring isolated showers, mainly over the mountains.

Temperatures are expected to decline noticeably through Saturday before stabilising on Sunday, returning to levels close to the seasonal average.
