Tourism crisis in occupied Cyprus: Low occupancy and hotels stay shut

Date:

The tourism sector in the occupied north appears to be facing a difficult summer season, with hotel occupancy falling short of expectations, according to Russian media reports.

Suleiman Kansu, general manager of the Salamis Bay Conti Resort & Spa, said occupancy at large hotels has not exceeded 70%, while smaller hotels and guesthouses are operating at around 30% occupancy or have remained closed altogether.

“A significant number of three-star hotels and budget accommodation providers were unable to open this year due to a lack of bookings,” he was quoted as saying.

Discounts fail to attract visitors

In an effort to boost demand, many hotel operators eased their booking conditions.

While guests were previously required to book a minimum stay of three nights, many establishments now accept reservations for just one or two nights.

Hotels have also reduced prices and offered complimentary transfers and meals, but the report says these incentives have failed to generate a significant increase in visitor numbers.

Russian tourists warned of risks

The report notes that many Russian tourists continue to avoid travelling to the occupied north despite lower prices because of legal and financial concerns.

It highlights that entry through the illegal airport at Tymbou (Ercan), located in the Turkish-occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, is regarded as illegal by the Republic of Cyprus.

The report also states that international health insurance policies generally do not apply in the occupied area, meaning visitors may have to cover any medical expenses themselves.

In addition, the report cites Cyprus’ proximity to the conflict in the Middle East as another factor discouraging travel demand.
