Maria Angela Holguin, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue, is expected to travel to Ankara on 26 July ahead of António Guterres’ visit to Cyprus from 27 to 29 July.
According to Turkey’s ANKA news agency, Holguin will hold meetings in several European capitals, including Brussels and Ankara, as part of preparations for the UN Secretary-General’s visit.
Meeting with Turkish foreign minister
ANKA reported that Holguin is expected to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on 26 July.
The discussions are expected to focus on the latest diplomatic developments regarding the Cyprus issue, the positions of the parties involved and the agenda for Guterres’ visit to the island.
Guterres to meet both leaders
According to the report, the UN Secretary-General will make what is expected to be his final visit to Cyprus before the end of his term in office.
Under the current programme, Guterres will hold separate meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and President Nikos Christodoulides before chairing a joint meeting between the two leaders.
Civil society meetings also planned
Guterres is also expected to meet representatives of the bicommunal technical committees and civil society organisations to receive updates on cooperation between the two communities and prospects for restarting negotiations.
ANKA said Holguin’s meetings in Ankara and Brussels are considered important for completing the diplomatic preparations for Guterres’ visit and assessing the positions of all parties ahead of the next steps in the Cyprus issue.
