Red alert issued over wildfire risk on Wednesday

Date:

The risk of forest fires breaking out and spreading will be at “Red Alert” level on Wednesday, the Department of Forests has announced.

In a statement, the department stressed that causing a fire is a criminal offence under the Forests Law and the Law on the Prevention and Suppression of Fires in the Countryside, carrying strict penalties.

Authorities issued a strong appeal to the public to remain extremely cautious during outdoor activities and to completely avoid actions that could potentially start a fire.

Emergency numbers for reports

The Department of Forests called on anyone who notices smoke or a fire to immediately contact 1407 (Department of Forests) or 112 (Fire Service).

The warning comes amid increased concerns over the rapid spread of wildfires during periods of high temperatures and dry conditions.
