Cyprus heat warning issued as temperatures reach 41°C

A yellow heat warning issued by the Department of Meteorology comes into force today from 1:00pm to 4:30pm, with temperatures expected to soar to 41°C inland as Cyprus remains in the grip of an intense heatwave.

Conditions will remain mostly sunny, although locally increased cloud is expected over mountainous areas during the afternoon. Temperatures are forecast to rise gradually until Thursday, remaining above seasonal averages before easing slightly on Friday.

Heat warning in force this afternoon

The Department of Meteorology said seasonal low pressure continues to affect the region.

Temperatures will reach around 41°C inland, about 35°C along the south and east coasts, 32°C along the west and north coasts, and around 31°C in the higher mountains.

Winds will initially be light and variable at 3 Beaufort before becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly at 3 to 4 Beaufort, locally reaching 5 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slight.

Hot weather to persist through Thursday

Tonight will remain mostly clear, although patches of mist, fog and low cloud may develop in some areas overnight.

Minimum temperatures will fall to around 24°C inland and along the coast, and to around 21°C over the highest mountains.

Looking ahead, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be mostly sunny, with occasional afternoon cloud developing mainly over the mountains.

Temperatures are expected to continue rising gradually until Thursday, remaining above the seasonal average, before a slight drop on Friday.
