Yellow warning issued for storms – Affected areas listed

Date:

A warning has been issued by the Department of Meteorology, which activated a yellow weather alert due to expected strong thunderstorms affecting several parts of the island.

The yellow warning comes despite the summer season, with forecasters warning of intense localised downpours and hazardous weather conditions during the afternoon hours.

Heavy thunderstorms expected inland and in mountains

According to the warning, individual strong thunderstorms are expected to develop mainly over the mountains, inland areas and the northern parts of Cyprus.

Rainfall intensity may exceed 35 millimetres per hour in affected zones, increasing the risk of local flooding and difficult driving conditions.

The yellow warning remains in effect from 12:00 noon until 18:00 in the evening.

Yellow alert in force during afternoon hours

Authorities stressed that the weather system is unstable, with conditions favourable for sudden storm development.

The yellow alert under the storm warning covers a six-hour window during which residents are advised to remain cautious, particularly in exposed or flood-prone areas.

Weather instability continues despite summer season

Although July is typically a dry month in Cyprus, the current weather pattern is influenced by unstable atmospheric conditions.

Meteorologists warn that short but intense storms may continue to develop locally, reinforcing the need to monitor updates during the yellow warning period.
