Zakaki tragedy: Colleagues’ testimony reveals 55-year-old’s profile

Date:

Authorities involved in the Zakaki probe are assessing whether the 55-year-old police officer’s reported financial difficulties played a role in the incident. Investigators are also examining personal tensions within the couple, alongside recent communications and interactions before the attack.

Sources indicate the officer faced mounting economic strain, including borrowing money and working additional hours to supplement his income. Officers are now reviewing whether these factors contributed to the escalation of events.

Concerns over leaked video and images

The probe has also been overshadowed by the circulation of video and photographic material from the scene of the attack. The footage, widely shared via messaging applications, shows the two individuals inside and outside the vehicle.

Authorities are treating the leak as a serious breach, raising concerns over privacy violations and the handling of sensitive evidence. A similar incident was previously reported in another high-profile criminal case in Cyprus.

Profile of the officer under scrutiny

As part of the investigation, colleagues of the 55-year-old have described him as a consistent and sociable officer with no prior behavioural issues that suggested such an outcome.

Testimonies indicate he frequently worked overtime and, at times, held a second job. While generally seen as stable in conduct, some colleagues were aware of financial strain, including occasional borrowing.

Internal review and financial activity

Investigators have confirmed that the officer had recently been called to his unit for discussions after concerns emerged about repeated borrowing from colleagues and possible gambling-related activity during service hours.

Although the meeting was not disciplinary, he was advised to increase overtime work and was offered support to manage financial pressures.

These findings form a key part of the ongoing probe into possible motive.

Next steps in the investigation

The Zakaki case continues with court orders expected to access mobile phone data belonging to both individuals. Bank transactions are also under review, while CCTV footage is being analysed to reconstruct movements before the attack.

Authorities are also focusing on the final 24 hours prior to the incident, amid reports of a serious dispute between the couple. Investigators are assessing whether recent financial transactions involving the woman could have contributed to rising tensions.
