Iran-US negotiations are expected to resume “as soon as possible” following the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
The announcement comes after a period of heightened tensions marked by military exchanges that threatened a fragile ceasefire framework.
Mediation efforts in Doha
According to officials, separate meetings were held in Doha between Qatari and Pakistani mediators and both US and Iranian negotiators.
The Iran-US negotiations reportedly showed “positive progress” on procedural matters linked to a preliminary agreement signed on 17 June.
Mediators said discussions will continue following the completion of official mourning ceremonies in Iran.
Key issues on the table
Future rounds of negotiations between Iran and the US are expected to focus on several contentious issues, including the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.
Both sides are also operating under a 60-day negotiation framework, which may be extended depending on progress.
Technical discussions have reportedly already resulted in agreements allowing Iran access to frozen funds held in Qatar for essential purchases.
Maritime security tensions persist
Despite diplomatic progress, tensions remain over maritime security in the Gulf region.
The US has emphasised the importance of ensuring free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, supported by regional partners during recent defence consultations.
Iran, however, maintains that the waterway falls under its jurisdiction and rejects external military oversight.
Exchange of positions continues
US President Donald Trump described recent meetings as positive and said progress was being made on nuclear-related issues.
Iran has denied direct negotiations with Washington but continues to engage indirectly through mediators.
Both sides remain divided over key geopolitical and security concerns, particularly in relation to regional influence and control of strategic waterways.
