Xylofagou: Funerals held in Bulgaria for two children who died inside car

Date:

The case in Xylofagou involving the deaths of two siblings, aged eight and ten, continues to raise serious unanswered questions, as authorities maintain their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

According to the community leader of Xylofagou, Giorgos Ioulianos, the children’s uncle is expected to arrive in Cyprus to arrange the transfer and burial of the two children in Bulgaria. Developments are expected within the next 24 hours.

Post-mortem fails to determine cause of death

A post-mortem examination on the bodies of the two children was completed but did not determine the exact cause of death, adding further complexity to the case.

Investigators are focusing on two key questions: how the children entered the vehicle but were unable to exit, and why they were left without supervision at home.

Vehicle examination and technical probe

Authorities are also examining the possibility of a technical malfunction involving the vehicle’s locking system. The car is expected to undergo a specialised technical inspection by experts from the manufacturer in the coming days.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage showing the children playing in the yard before moving towards the vehicle. However, due to low image quality, the footage will undergo enhancement to extract clearer evidence.

Police have already collected 25 statements from neighbours and family members. The children’s father and his partner have both given testimony in the presence of their lawyers.

British Bases investigation continues

According to a statement by the British Bases, forensic examinations were unable to determine the cause of death, requiring further specialised analysis. No conclusions have been reached.

The father and his partner remain in custody and are expected to appear in court on Thursday in relation to neglect allegations.

Preliminary findings suggest the children entered the vehicle on their own and remained trapped inside for more than three hours, according to ongoing investigations by British Bases police.
