Concerns over illegal dumping have emerged in the area next to the Flamingo Lake in Paralimni, with residents warning of environmental damage and risks to planned green space development.
Public complaints over construction waste
According to complaints circulating on social media, an area of around 20,000 square metres near the Flamingo Lake is being used for the disposal of construction waste and other materials.
The site, located within the wider municipal area of Paralimni and Deryneia, was originally intended to be developed into a green and recreation zone.
Residents say the ongoing illegal dumping risks altering the character of the planned park and undermining environmental protection efforts.
Environmental and health concerns
Local residents have expressed concern that continued dumping could create pollution, odours and potential public health risks.
They also warn that heavy vehicle traffic linked to waste transport may damage recently resurfaced roads and strain older underground water and sewage infrastructure.
Some reports suggest that the road network in the area was not designed to handle daily heavy truck movement, raising further concerns over long-term structural damage.
Calls for immediate action
Residents are calling on relevant authorities to investigate the situation urgently and take measures to stop further dumping.
They stress the need to preserve the area’s intended use as a green and recreational space, particularly given its proximity to the Flamingo Lake, a known ecological point of interest.
